Recently, I saw an exhibition at the Hagedorn gallery featuring Bryan Whitney's x-ray photographs. Known more commonly as a device used to obtain images of the inside of objects for medical purposes, the x-ray generator has actually been used by several artists including Whitney to create works of art. One artist working since the 70s with x-ray photography is Steven N. Meyers, who shows his x-rays as positives, negatives, and solarizations. Both Meyers and Whitney focus on plants as their primary subject however, Whitney takes his black and white images and hand colors them using photoshop. This technique creates a very lush, ephemeral appearance much different than Meyers. However, I find Meyers work equally appealing, especially this images of plants arranged in a landscape composition. Unlike Meyers, Whitney also uses his x-ray images in composites of people, some creating images that are conveyed as fashion photography. Both are very interesting and worth checking out.

3-dimensional Re-photographed
Thinking about my work as a somewhat 3 dimensional object/composition that I want to make into a 2 dimensional object, I have gained some insight and inspiration from two artists working similarly: Brandon Juhasz and Kate Stone. The above image is from Kate Stone's series "At the Seams". Both use photographs to construct 3 dimensional objects and then photograph the constructions; however, Stone uses her own photographs while Juhasz uses found photographs. Nevertheless, they both make statements about what reality is. Unlike Stone, Juhasz does so in an attempt to also question the medium of photography and point out how images mold our desires and standards. In much the same way as Stone and Juhasz I want to start making my collages a completely 3 dimensional object to be re-photographed in order to fully realize my "play things" I have been constructing and to question our desires for these images.

Website
Finally... I have a website. After over a year of paying hosting fees and not actually having a website, I got motivated and made one with virb.com. I think I have Matt and Holly to thank for guidance in this instance. It's s easy with virb and I'm quite pleased with the outcome. However, I do have a lot of work to do editing and posting images. I'm having a difficult time deciding how many images need to go in each category and how many categories I should have. Either way, I think this is a good leap in the right direction toward self-promotion. cammilusk.com
